I was checking out this VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80’s and it got me thinking about one hit wonders in OPM. Since I am just working here unprepared (like I always do), I’ll list down the bands who in one way or another became the staple of our radio stations but for some reason were not able to release a hit after that.
Here they are:
1. Your Love – Alamid
When this song came out, it became really huge because well, Pinoys love a sappy love song. I was surprised that this band is (I think they are still around) a rocking band.
2. Long Hair – Weedd
This is a rather obnoxious song that caught on because guys don’t really like to get a haircut in school. This band disappeared from the airwaves (or in our consciousness for that matter) after the rah-rah was over.
3. Pagsubok – Orient Pearl
I remember this song because of the jokesters that played with lyrics. I noticed that Pinoys really love a good ballad. And this one, campy as it may be, has a positive message to it so it became the hit that it was.
4. Paglisan – Color It Redd
It pains me to include this band in this list but we have to admit, this is the song they are very famous for and nothing else. I feel very sad indeed because they are a really good band. And this is not my favorite song of theirs.
I know they have a video for this song, and their outfits were really hot back then but I cannot find it. So all I got is the song:
5. Line to Heaven -Introvoys
Like most of the bands in this list, this band also disappeared after this song was gone from the countdowns. They were not able to sustain another hit after this although some might contend that they were not one hit wonders because they were able to release some minimal hits before this song. That is not the whole point, actually. It is about sustainability after a hit single.
So for nostalgia’s sake, here it is:
6. Cool Ka Lang – Prettier than Pink
A really fun song. It is the first time in ages that I heard this song again. I think this song was also used in a commercial.
7. Ang Tipo Kong Lalake – DJ Alvaro
This song got a lot of attention because its realease was quite unconventional and was something new to the ears of Pinoys. An assertive Pinay? No waaay! Sad to say, we rarely got this spunk in our airwaves for quite some time now.
